The DITA XML standard is a cross industry open standard for managing structured publications, governed by OASIS.

The primary objective for the standard is to create a single source publishing standard allowing customers to leverage knowledge and best practice from other industries. With DITA the customer has a very good starting point for e.g. a metadata structure and an Information Type Architecture without investing significant time and money.

An open standard also allows customers to purchase non-proprietary Content Component Management Systems (CCMS) and to switch from one CCMS to another without having to convert all the data. The same goes for XML editor tools. The customer can switch from one tool to another, over night.
